THE TOWERS FAMILY SAGA
        EPISODE 9
The easy atmosphere at the
booth vanished as Tyler
watched the businessman
walk away. He didn't look
angry, but the carefree
smile was gone, replaced by
a quiet, focused intensity.
"The Towers merger?" Tyler
repeated, his voice level.
"Barbara, I thought your
dad was in real estate,
not the kind of guy who
has a name on every third
building in the city."
Barbara's face flushed.
"He is in real estate,
Tyler. It's just... it's
bigger than I let on."
"Bigger than you let on,
or bigger than you wanted
me to know?" Tyler asked.
He looked at Dorothy, who
stayed silent, letting her
sister navigate the truth
they had promised to tell.
"I wanted you to see me,"
Barbara whispered. "Just
me. Not the daughter of the
Towers fortune." Tyler
folded his napkin with
mechanical precision. "I
do see you. But now I see
the wall you've been
hiding behind, too." He
didn't get up to leave,
but the distance between
them felt miles wide. Back
at the estate, the fallout
from Virginia's decision
was beginning to settle.
James arrived unannounced,
finding Robert in the
study. "I can't do it,
sir," James said, his
usual polish replaced by
exhaustion. "Virginia
wants to build a life on
nothing but principles,
but I have bills, and I
have a career that relies
on the doors your name
opens." Robert looked at
his future son-in-law,
feeling a strange mix of
pity and disappointment.
"My daughter wants a
partner, James. Not a
dependent. If the name is
all you're marrying, then
maybe she's right to turn
down the fund." James
flashed a look of sudden
resentment. "It's easy for
you to say. You're the one
who built the wall. We're
just the ones trying not
to get crushed when she
pulls it down." Robert
realized then that honesty
wasn't just a rule, it was
a wrecking ball, and
nobody in the family was
wearing a hard hat.
