THE TOWERS FAMILY SAGA
        Episode 86
The silence that followed
the retreat of the sedans
was heavier than the noise.
Robert stood on the porch
of the main folding unit,
his eyes scanning the dark
veins of the canyon floor.
He knew the corporate men
were like the desert heat;
they faded in the night
only to return at noon.
"They'll be back with a
warrant next time," Minnie
said, joining him outside.
"Or a court order signed
by a judge in Phoenix."
Robert reached into his
pocket and pulled out a
small, encrypted USB drive.
"Miller gave me the last
fail-safe in the bunker."
"It's the digital deed to
the entire Ridge project."
Virginia walked up, her
stethoscope still around
her neck like a silver
tether to her other life.
"If that's the deed, then
Boom Lake is invincible."
"They can't evict a man
from his own foundation."
Dorothy and Shirley were
already back at the desk,
the blueprints for the
Phase Two housing spread
out across the iron table.
"We need to build faster,"
Dorothy said, her pencil
leaving a trail of lead.
"If we have families living
here by next month, we
become a township, Dad."
"A township has a vote."
Robert felt the weight of
the transition in his soul.
The radical honesty was
leading them to a throne
made of gravel and steel.
He wasn't just a veteran
or a writer or a father;
he was the mayor of a
new kind of Arizona dream.
Barbara called from the
lower gate, her voice
clear on the radio link.
"The first shipment of
insulation just arrived."
"We’re turning the units
into a permanent row."
The saga was a manual for
the construction of a
life that couldn't be
bought or broken by New York.
Minnie smiled, her face
lit by the rising moon.
"The Towers Township."
"It has a nice ring to it."
Robert looked at his girls,
the architects of the rise.
The Arizona air was crisp.
The line was held fast.
The future was in the dirt.
