THE TOWERS FAMILY SAGA
        Episode 85
The wind on the Ridge had
a sharp, metallic edge to
it as the sun went down.
Robert stood by the open
hatch of the South Unit,
holding a folder labeled
"Project Green-Light 64."
It was his father’s hand,
the ink faded but the
intent still razor-sharp.
"He knew it wouldn't be
the bombs that got us,"
Robert said to the dark.
"It was the dependency."
Minnie was inside, marking
the boxes with a heavy
black permanent marker.
"Dependency on the grid?"
she asked, looking up.
"Dependency on the lie,"
Robert corrected her.
"He built these folding
towns so people could
walk away from the debt."
Virginia walked the line,
her flashlight beam a
cutting sword of white.
"The men in the sedans are
moving toward the gate."
"They’ve brought a tow
truck this time, Dad."
Robert felt the old fire
of the 11th Marines flare
deep in his tired chest.
"They think they’re taking
back the company assets."
"They don't realize that
the assets are the girls."
Dorothy and Shirley were
at the digital console,
their fingers flying over
the encrypted keys.
"The landmark status is
locking the gate, Dad!"
Shirley shouted over the
rising howl of the wind.
"If they touch the fence,
it’s a federal violation."
The radical honesty was
their legal razor wire.
They weren't fighting with
bullets or with bribes.
They were fighting with
the public record of the
land they had reclaimed.
Barbara stood at the edge
of the cliff, watching
the headlights stall out
at the bottom of the hill.
"They’re turning around,"
she said, her voice a
mixture of relief and awe.
"They can't fight the
light of the Ridge."
Robert closed the folder
and locked the steel door.
The saga was a blueprint
of a family’s defiance.
The Towers were no longer
the victims of a legacy.
They were the masters of
the industrial frontier.
Minnie rested her head
against the cold metal.
"We’re safe for tonight."
"We’re safe for the life,"
Robert said, holding her.
The Arizona stars were
bright, cold, and true.
The family was the wall.
The work was the peace.
