THE TOWERS FAMILY SAGA
        EPISODE 29
The room was small,
windowless, and smelled
of stale coffee and old
paper. Robert sat across
from a young lawyer with
sharp, predatory eyes.
'Mr. Towers, did you ever
authorize the burial of
unmarked drums?' Virginia
watched from the back of
the room, her face a mask
of stone. She saw Robert
hesitate for one second.
The old Robert would have
lied with a smile. The
new Robert looked
directly into the camera.
'I didn't authorize the
burial,' he said clearly.
'But I did authorize the
cover-up for thirty
years.' 'I knew they were
there, and I said nothing.'
The lawyer stopped typing
on his laptop. He wasn't used to
people handing him the
noose. 'You realize this
is an admission of
criminal negligence?'
'It?s the truth,
counselor,' Robert said.
'Finally.' Virginia felt
a strange pride surge
through her chest. The
man she married was
finally visible again.
'And James?' the lawyer
asked. 'James followed my
orders. The fault is
entirely mine.' The
deposition lasted for six
more hours, every secret
spilled onto the record.
When they finally left
the building, the sun was
setting over the city.
'You did it,' Virginia
said, taking his arm.
'I did,' Robert said,
looking at the skyline.
'And I feel lighter than
I have in decades.' Bella
was waiting at the condo
door, her purr audible in
the quiet room. The
truth was out, and the
world was waiting.
